Kinda similar thing happened when eons ago I read Richard Preston's 'The Hot Zone' on the Ebola virus..are you onto such topics? A recent book I recommend similar to it is Siddhart Mukherjee's 'The Emperor of Maladies' (a great book on the history of cancer, a Pulitzer prize winner too).
